Ingredients

  • 1.5 LB lean ground beef
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 15 oz cans tomato sauce (or 1 28 oz can)
  • 2830 oz water (use it to rinse the tomato sauce cans and pour into chili) Can also use beef broth.
  • 2 15.5 oz cans mild chili beans
  • 3T Chili powder (or more to taste)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional Toppings: shredded cheese, chopped onion, cilantro, sour cream, hot sauce, crackers, tortilla chips, Fritos

Instructions

CROCKPOT DIRECTIONS:

  1. Dice onion.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Saute onion for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add ground beef.
  5. Chop and cook through.
  6. Add seasonings: chili powder, salt, pepper, and any other preferred spices such as cumin.
  7. Add all other ingredients to a crockpot and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4-6 hours.

STOVETOP DIRECTIONS:

  1. Dice onion.
  2. Heat dutch over medium heat.
  3. Saute onion for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add ground beef.
  5. Chop and cook through.
  6. Add seasonings: chili powder, salt, pepper, and any other preferred spices such as cumin.
  7. Add all other ingredients and bring to a simmer.
  8. Reduce to low heat and cook for a minimum of 30 minutes, but the longer you cook the more the flavors will meld.

 

Notes

  • If you prefer a thicker chili, add an additional ½ lb of ground beef or an additional can of chili beans. We prefer ours a little “soupier” or thinner
  • Cumin is another great and common spice to add to chili. My family doesn’t prefer it so I omit, but feel free to include it to taste. I’d start with one tablespoon.
  • This chili is even better served as leftovers than it is when originally cooked. It’s great for meal prep and can easily be frozen and reheated at a later time.
