Sweet and Spicy BBQ Baked Bean Recipe With Pork and Beans

These BBQ Baked Beans were my Granny Betty’s most “famous” recipe. She was required to bring it to any family gathering and everyone LOVED them! She would customize the dish based on the guest list. My Great Uncle LOVED them extra spicy so she’d load them up with extra hot sauce for him.

His extra spicy batch was always my favorite, but I’ve toned down the recipe here to make it a bit more kid friendly! If you love spice like my Uncle and me, add extra hot sauce to your portion after serving!

My Granny passed many years ago and my family misses her dearly. Everyone also misses her delicious meals including these baked beans. I am SO grateful I spent so many days with her in the kitchen and had this one memorized, so that I can carry on the tradition for years to come.

One important thing to note about this recipe is that it’s not intended to be an overly sweet baked bean recipe like many others. We like it tangy and spicy (so we add more hot sauce than called for in this recipe). If you like a sweeter baked beans recipe, add brown sugar to taste.

Ingredients:

  • Onion
  • Bacon: the bacon adds such a great salty, smoky flavor to this recipe. If you’re vegetarian feel free to omit it (and substitute pork and beans for white beans) and add a splash of liquid smoke instead.
  • Pork and Beans: pork and beans are a great shortcut in making flavorful baked beans. The pork and beans are already cooked in a tomato sauce and pork. You doctor them up with extra goodness like onions, bacon, and bbq sauce to create the perfect baked bean dish.
  • Seasonings: Salt, Pepper, and Garlic to taste. The bacon and pork and beans are already pretty salty so you might not need much.
  • BBQ Sauce: use any sweet BBQ sauce (I like Sweet Baby Ray’s)
  • Ketchup
  • Hot Sauce: My granny always used Texas Pete. I’ve tried it with others but TP is my favorite!

Directions for making Baked Beans With Pork and Beans:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Chop onion and bacon into small bite size pieces.
  3. Heat a dutch oven or any oven safe pot or deep skillet to medium heat and add onion and bacon.
  4. Cook until onion is translucent and bacon is cooked to your preference. I like it extra crispy in this recipe because when it cooks with the sauce it does soften.
  5. Once done, add beans, ketchup, barbecue sauce and any other seasonings. Stir.
  6. Remove from the stove and add to the oven for at least 20 minutes but up to 60 minutes. (You can skip this step if in a rush but it does yummy things to the flavor!)

Optional Add-ins:

  • Ground beef or other proteins
  • Sautéed bell pepper
  • Cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes for extra spice
  • Brown sugar for a sweeter taste
  • Extra hot sauce. I stick with 2 tsp when my kids are eating but love to add more to my portion! My family likes it spicy!

What To Eat With Baked Beans:

Baked beans are a perfect side dish for your summer barbecue but my family loves them year round. They’re so good that we even serve them at holiday dinners. Yup, even Thanksgiving!

  • Boneless BBQ Pork Ribs
  • Burgers and Hot Dogs
  • Grilled or Roasted Vegetables
  • Cole Slaw
  • Potato Salad
  • Macaroni Salad
  • Corn on the Cob
  • Macaroni and Cheese

FAQ

What kind of beans are used in baked beans?

Navy beans are traditionally the beans used to make baked beans. My granny’s recipe calls for pork and beans which are white beans prepared with tomato sauce.

Can I substitute the pork and beans for another type of bean?

Yes! You can use any type of beans you want. Any white beans such as cannellini beans or navy beans will be great.

Should I rinse the beans before adding them to this recipe?

When using pork and beans, you do not need to rinse the beans as they are packed in a tomato sauce that adds great flavor to the recipe. If you use another type of bean, you’ll want to drain and rinse them.

Can you freeze cooked baked beans?

I’ve never personally frozen baked beans but according to Southern Living, you can! Check out their article about how to do so properly.

Can I make these bbq baked beans with pork and beans in advance?

Absolutely! These are a great make-ahead dish that you can cook in advance of a gathering and heat before serving. I often toss them in a crockpot on the day of an event to warm up so I can keep them warmer longer.

Can I make these baked beans in the slow cooker?

Yes! I do this regularly. You will still need to saute your bacon and onion before dumping everything in the slow cooker and letting it cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8!

Granny’s BBQ Baked Bean Recipe With Pork and Beans

  • Author: Miranda Schultz

Description

Saucy, sweet, slightly spicy, and full of bacon?! What more could you want in a perfect side dish?! I can’t think of anything better. My whole family RAVES about this baked bean recipe with pork and beans and yours will too. I’m honored to be sharing one of my favorites made famous by my Granny with you today!

Ingredients

Scale
  • One Chopped Onion
  • 4 Slices Bacon
  • 4 Cans Pork and Beans
  • Salt, Pepper, and Garlic to taste
  • 1/2 cup any sweet BBQ sauce (I like Sweet Baby Ray’s)
  • 1/2 Cup Ketchup
  • 2 tsp hot sauce of choice (My Granny only used Texas Pete) Use more for extra spice

Instructions

Notes

You can omit the hot sauce altogether for a sweet baked bean recipe with no spice. The amount listed in the recipe is mild enough that even my small children eat it. I like mine extra spicy so I add extra hot sauce to my portion. Texas Pete is my preferred hot sauce for this recipe as it has a nice tangy, vinegary flavor with a bit of heat.

This is not a super sweet baked bean recipe like some you might be used to. The only sweetness comes from the ketchup and the bbq sauce. If you like a sweeter baked bean recipe, add brown sugar to taste.
